How ChatGPT Ads Work: Formats, Costs and Where They Run

var(--variable-Gytk_v1iq)

ChatGPT ads are paid placements that appear at the end of a ChatGPT answer when a sponsored product or service fits the conversation. OpenAI announced them on 16 January 2026 and started testing them in the United States a few weeks later. This article explains how the format works, what it costs, who actually sees the ads, and why almost none of it can be bought in Europe. Status: August 2026. This is a guide, not a pitch: if you want to know what it means for a Swiss company in particular, that sits on our page about ChatGPT advertising in Switzerland.

What are ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements inside the assistant, not banners around it. OpenAI describes the first format as an ad at the end of an answer, shown when a relevant sponsored product or service matches the current conversation. The ad is labelled and kept separate from the organic answer.

Three principles from OpenAI’s published advertising policy define what the format can and cannot do:

  • Answer independence: ads do not influence what ChatGPT tells you, and they are always separated and clearly marked.

  • Conversation privacy: advertisers get no access to your chats, and OpenAI states it never sells your data to advertisers.

  • Choice and control: personalisation can be switched off, and the data used for ads can be deleted at any time.

One further principle is easy to overlook and matters commercially: OpenAI states it does not use time spent in ChatGPT as an optimisation factor. An assistant that is not built to hold attention behaves differently from a feed. For advertisers that means reach will not grow by keeping people scrolling, so the value of a placement rests on how precisely it matches the moment rather than on session length.

There are hard exclusions too. OpenAI states that ads must not appear near sensitive or regulated topics such as physical or mental health, or politics, and that no ads are shown to accounts identified or predicted as under 18. During the test, ads are limited to signed-in adults. For advertisers in healthcare, insurance or anything adjacent, that is a structural limit rather than a policy footnote.

Who sees the ads, and who does not?

Ads appear only on the free tier and on ChatGPT Go. OpenAI has confirmed that Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free. This single sentence decides more about your reachable audience than any targeting setting.

ChatGPT Go is the low-cost tier OpenAI introduced at 8 US dollars a month, rolled out across 171 countries from August 2025 before reaching the United States. It sits between the free tier and Plus, and it carries ads.

The practical consequence: the more your audience skews toward paying subscribers, the smaller the pool you can actually reach. In markets with high willingness to pay for software, and Switzerland is one of them, that is not a rounding error. Anyone modelling ChatGPT ads as a channel with the same reach as Meta or Google is modelling the wrong universe.

It also shapes who you reach, not just how many. A free-tier audience is, by construction, the part of the user base that has chosen not to pay. Whether that correlates with your buyer depends entirely on your category, and it is worth answering before any budget is planned.

"Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. They are always separate and clearly labelled."

What does advertising in ChatGPT cost?

In the markets where the platform is open, advertisers buy through the OpenAI Ads Manager on a cost-per-click or cost-per-thousand-impressions basis, and there is no minimum spend. That is the whole of what is reliably documented about pricing.

Everything beyond that deserves scepticism. There is no published cost-per-click benchmark with a disclosed methodology, and none at all for Switzerland, because the market is not open here. Figures circulating in agency blogs are estimates presented as data. If someone quotes you a Swiss cost per click for ChatGPT ads today, they are guessing, and the guess cannot be checked.

What can be reasoned about is the shape of the auction rather than its price. Two things push in opposite directions. Inventory is scarce, because an ad only appears when a sponsored product genuinely fits the conversation, and the paying tiers are excluded. Demand is high, because the placement sits at the moment a decision is being formed. Scarce inventory plus decision-stage intent usually produces expensive clicks, so planning on the assumption of cheap reach would be optimistic.

A workable approach while prices are unknown is to plan the first phase as a learning budget rather than a performance budget. Decide what you need to find out, which creative angles work in a conversational placement and which product questions people actually ask, then set the budget at the level that produces enough of those signals. That framing survives the moment pricing becomes known, because the questions do not change. It also protects you from the more expensive mistake, which is treating a new surface as a scaled channel before anyone has learned how it converts.

The more useful budgeting question is not the click price but the conversion path behind it. A conversational placement can be interrogated: OpenAI has signalled that users may be able to ask follow-up questions directly from an ad. A channel where the ad answers questions demands a different landing experience than one where the ad only promises something.

Which markets can actually buy ChatGPT ads?

As of August 2026, ChatGPT advertising runs in nine markets: the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico. The United Kingdom was the first European market, opened in June 2026.

No business registered in the European Union can buy a placement. The obstacle is consent, not capacity. For personalised advertising in Europe, OpenAI has said it will rely on explicit user consent rather than legitimate interest, which means every user in the EU would have to be asked individually whether their chat history may be used for targeting. That is a product and legal build, not a switch.

A second layer is being added on top. The European Commission is reported to be preparing a designation for ChatGPT under the Digital Services Act, which applies to services above 45 million monthly users in the bloc. OpenAI is reported to have declared 120.4 million monthly EU users for ChatGPT search, far above the threshold. Designation brings transparency reporting, systemic risk assessments and supervisory fees, with penalties reaching 6 per cent of global annual revenue for non-compliance. Note that this is reported status, not a completed decision.

Switzerland is a separate case, and it is worth being precise about why. Switzerland is bound by neither the GDPR nor the Digital Services Act, and it has its own data protection act. The United Kingdom, also outside the EU, was opened before any EU market. That makes an earlier Swiss launch plausible. It is equally plausible that a market of nine million people simply never reaches the top of a rollout queue. Both readings are assessments, not forecasts, and anyone presenting either as a date is overselling what is known.

ChatGPT Shopping is not the same as ChatGPT ads

The two are routinely confused, and the difference decides where a retailer should put effort first. ChatGPT ads are bought placements. ChatGPT Shopping is a product surface where items can surface directly inside a conversation, and it is not something you buy.

What decides visibility there is product data: complete attributes, accurate availability, correct prices, structured markup an assistant can parse without guessing. That is closer to feed hygiene than to media buying, and it is work that pays off across every channel that reads a product feed, not only inside ChatGPT.

For most Swiss retailers this is the more relevant near-term question, for a simple reason: it is available now, whereas advertising is not. The same logic applies one level up, to whether your brand is cited in answers at all. That is earned rather than bought, and it is the discipline we cover in our guide to generative engine optimisation.

The privacy architecture behind all of this is worth understanding as well, because it constrains what targeting will ever be possible in a conversational product. We looked at that trade-off in our article on targeted advertising and privacy, and the tension it describes is exactly what is now slowing the European rollout.

There is a simple test for whether any of this is urgent for you. If your products are the kind people compare before buying, appliances, software, insurance, travel, then assistants are already part of that comparison and your product data is already being read, whether or not you have thought about it. If your business runs on relationships or local service, the shopping surface matters less and the citation question matters more. Both roads lead back to the same work, which is being legible to a machine that summarises before a human ever clicks.

What to do while the market is closed

Three things are worth doing before ChatGPT advertising opens anywhere near you, and all three pay off on their own even if it never does: measure where your brand appears in AI answers today, fix whatever stops you being cited, and get product data and measurement into a state where a campaign could start immediately.

Summary

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that appear at the end of a ChatGPT answer when a product fits the conversation. OpenAI announced the format in January 2026 and now runs it in nine markets, with the United Kingdom the first in Europe. Ads reach only the free and Go tiers, while Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free, which limits reachable audience more than any targeting setting does. No EU business can buy a placement, because OpenAI has committed to explicit consent for personalised advertising in Europe. Switzerland, bound by neither the GDPR nor the Digital Services Act, is a separate case with no announced date. This guide covers formats, costs, markets and what to prepare in the meantime. Status: August 2026.

FAQ

Title

What are ChatGPT ads?

Sponsored placements inside ChatGPT that appear at the end of an answer when a relevant product or service matches the conversation. They are clearly labelled and kept separate from the organic answer. OpenAI announced the format on 16 January 2026 and began testing it in the United States shortly after, initially for signed-in adults only.

Who sees advertising in ChatGPT?

Only users on the free tier and on ChatGPT Go, the 8 dollar per month tier. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad-free. In markets with high subscription rates this materially limits the audience you can reach, which is a planning constraint most forecasts leave out.

What does ChatGPT advertising cost?

In the open markets the Ads Manager runs on cost-per-click and cost-per-thousand-impressions bidding. No reliable benchmark with a disclosed methodology has been published, and no Swiss pricing exists because the market is not open here. Any Swiss cost-per-click quoted today is an estimate that cannot be verified.

Is there a minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?

No. The OpenAI Ads Manager launched without a minimum spend requirement in the markets where it is available. That lowers the entry barrier considerably compared with traditional media buys, though it says nothing about what budget is needed for a campaign to produce enough data to optimise on.

Where exactly do the ads appear?

At the end of a ChatGPT answer, when a sponsored product or service is relevant to the current conversation. OpenAI has said ads are clearly labelled and separated from the organic answer, and that users can see why they were shown a particular ad or hide it and give a reason.

Do ads influence what ChatGPT answers?

OpenAI states they do not. Its published advertising principles commit to answer independence: responses are optimised to be useful, and advertising is always separate and clearly marked. OpenAI also states it does not use time spent in ChatGPT as an optimisation factor, which distinguishes the product from attention-driven feeds.

Do advertisers get access to my conversations?

No. OpenAI states that advertisers are not given access to conversations with ChatGPT and that user data is never sold to advertisers. Users can switch personalisation off and delete the data used for advertising at any time.

Why can EU companies not buy ChatGPT ads?

Because of consent rather than capacity. For personalised advertising in Europe OpenAI has said it will rely on explicit user consent instead of legitimate interest, so every EU user would need to be asked individually. A designation of ChatGPT under the Digital Services Act is also reported to be in preparation, which would add transparency and risk-reporting duties.

What is ChatGPT Shopping?

A product surface where items can appear directly inside a conversation. It is separate from advertising and cannot be bought. Visibility there depends on product data quality: complete attributes, accurate availability and prices, and structured markup. For most retailers it is the more relevant near-term question, because it is available now.

How do we prepare while the market is closed?

Measure where your brand appears in AI answers today, fix what prevents you being cited, and bring product data and measurement to a state where a campaign could start immediately. All three pay off independently of whether ChatGPT advertising ever reaches your market.
